PPG BMS - Basic Rock Scrambling - May 2024

Scrambling Course

Rock Scrambling

This course is the first course in the Pikes Peak Group's Basic Mountaineering School (BMS) curriculum. Basic Rock Scrambling consists of a set of skills that fill a gap between on or off-trail hiking and technical climbing. Skills include assessing hazards and decision making, scrambling techniques, assessing and choosing off-trail routes in scrambling terrain.

The PPG WTS - Wilderness Fundamentals Course is the prerequisite for this course.  Students must have earned the "Wilderness Trekking School Student" badge to be able to register for this course.

The prerequisite course covers concepts that will be expected knowledge for this course and will reference the textbook (Freedom of the Hills, 9th ed.) provided from the PPG WTS - Wilderness Fundamentals Course.

The class consists two blocks of instruction and two field trips.  Block one is a self-study portion performed by reading through the Student Handbook and reviewing the additional materials referenced by the links in the handbook.  Block two is a one hour Zoom class.  The two field trips will involve discussion, hands on demonstration and practice of the techniques in Blocks one and two.  Completion of both blocks and both field trips are required for award of the Scrambling Badge.

If you have any questions or if you have issues registering for this course, please contact Britt Jones (britt@globalreality.biz) to request assistance.

Block One.  Self-learning accomplished by reading the BMS – Basic Rock Scrambling Student Handbook that will be provided by the instructors, to enrolled students.  Within the handbook, you will find overall course information and hyperlinks to various articles or videos.  Also, note that much of the material is cited from out-of-print A Hiker’s Guide to Scrambling Safely, by Tom Morin.

Field Trip Two. Continued skills practice 8a-noon on 5 May 2024.  We'll expand upon what you learned in Field Trip One, will introduce more exposure, and will familiarize you with scrambling protection and belaying.  Students will need all the required equipment.

Field Trips One and Two will be listed as separate trips.  Instructors will add students to the trips after registration for the class.
