Sport Lead Climbing Field Day 1 – Shelf Road

We will discuss, demo and practice the skills needed for leading sport climbs at the climbing crag.

Meet at 8 am in the parking lot past the Bank Campground in Shelf Road.  We will be hiking to the Bank Rob Wall.

We will review gear and basic climbing safety, then learn lead climbing techniques on easy sport climbs.  We will learn how to safely set up a top-rope anchor, and then how to clean the anchor using various methods, all under direct instructor supervision.

Required Equipment

Basic climbing kit- harness, helmet, shoes.

Belay device with locking carabiner- ATC or similar, Gri Gri or similar, or whatever you own.

Personal tether system (PAS) or 120 cm sling to use for this purpose, with locking carabiner.

Rappel back-up loop- approx. 12 inch tied loop of nylon accessory cord, or Hollow Block loop, with locking carabiner.

Quickdraws- 6-12 in number, any type/length.

Cordelette- 16-20 feet (untied) of 7mm nylon cord to use for anchor rigging (quad), with 4 locking carabiners.

Locking carabiners- one extra in addition to the 7 listed above for 8 total.
