Details to come - We will meet at South Colony Road (County Road 120). If we have enough 4WD cars to carpool from there, we will drive up to the 4WD trailhead. The upper 4WD road is extremely rough and requires a high-clearance 4WD vehicle. The drive from the lower lot to the upper trailhead is about 2.7 miles and can take an hour.
The best dispersed camping is along South Colony Road (County Road 120) between the lower 2WD parking area and the upper 4WD trailhead. There are numerous established pull-offs and previously used campsites scattered along the road. Overnight camping is not allowed at the lower 2WD trailhead parking lot itself. You can leave your vehicle there, but you cannot sleep in it or pitch a tent in the parking area.
There are legal backcountry campsites in the forested areas below the lakes and along the Humboldt Peak approach trail. These are excellent if you want a quieter experience and an alpine sunrise, but you'll need to carry your gear several miles. Camp only in designated or well-established sites to protect the fragile alpine environment.
Alvarado campground, located on CO140, 5 miles west of highway 69, and one mile north of the Colfax Lane turnoff. Alvarado has 6 sites remaining (as of 6/16) and can accommodate up to a 35 foot RV (no hookups).
