Ascending Hikes – Berthoud Pass - Second Creek TH to Twin Cones
This is a skill-building trip open to all but especially for CMC Members who joined the club since January 2024. This hike will get us to the Continental Divide and walk the ridge to Twin Cones. This Ascending Hike focuses on traveling on alpine tundra, route finding, following a route on an app or map, and high altitude hiking. Reserved for CMC members for whom these are new experiences. The trail begins at the Second Creek Trailhead and enters the forest.
The trail climbs 700’ in just one mile from Highway 40 to the hut, which overlooks an alpine basin (1.0 mile 11,243’). It continues west another half mile through treeline before ending abruptly on the edge of open tundra (1.55 miles).
About a mile in, hikers will reach the Broome Hut. Just past the Broome Hut, the trail enters the Vasquez Peak Wilderness and begins to climb into alpine. The trail eventually meets with the Mt. Nystrom Trail (#13), We will continue on the trail to the Continental Divide to reach South Twin Cones.
