Ascending Hikes – North Star Mountain

A day hike to the summit and back from the Hoosier Pass trailhead in winter conditions. This is primarily a training hike for our Orizaba team but others with winter mountaineering experience are welcome to join with leader permission.

  • Mileage: 8.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 2,400 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 13,614 ft
  • Pace: 1-1.5 mph

First priority for registration will be to our Orizaba team but other qualified hikers are welcome.

We'll likely be hiking in some new snow but probably won't need snowshoes.  There will be mainly off-trail hiking over snow-covered rock and most of the time will be spent hiking above 12,000 ft.  Participants should be comfortable hiking/scrambling on snowy rock and keeping warm on a high ridge in below freezing temps.

There will be an optional potluck tailgate after the hike and our Orizaba group will be tent camping nearby on Friday night as well.

We will meet up at the Hoosier Pass trailhead parking lot.  Arrive in time to be ready to start hiking at 8 am.  Hope to be back at the trailhead by 4 pm at the latest.
