After reaching the frozen lake, we’ll set up camp in a sheltered spot before heading out on an afternoon excursion to explore the surrounding terrain, including two seldom-visited overlooks with sweeping views of the basin. The trip offers crisp air, star-filled nights, and a peaceful alpine landscape transformed by snow and solitude.

A winter camping trip to Lost Lake in Roosevelt National Forest unfolds as a steady 2-mile climb from the Hessie Trailhead, following the same snow-covered path in and out while gaining about 900 feet through quiet evergreens and open clearings. Once camp is established near the frozen shoreline, the afternoon opens up for exploration—wandering across rolling drifts to two seldom-visited overlooks that reveal expansive, snow-filled views of the surrounding basin. After settling in for a cozy night beneath the winter sky, we’ll enjoy a shared breakfast in the crisp morning air before beginning our relaxed return down the familiar, tranquil trail to the trailhead.
