BPX Trip – BPX 2-Day: Wind River Basin from East Portal TH (RMNP)
Join us for a rugged overnight winter backpacking trip into the Wind River area of Rocky Mountain National Park, where quiet forests and broad snow-covered meadows set the tone for a true cold-season adventure. We’ll travel on a snow-packed route to a sheltered campsite, settle in for a frigid but rewarding night, and explore the surrounding basins before heading out the next morning. This trip requires prior winter camping experience, solid cold-weather systems, and comfort managing overnight conditions in subfreezing temperatures. (If you recently completed Winter Camping School, this is a great opportunity to not let those hard-won winter camping skills atrophy.)

This is an overnight winter backpacking outing into the Wind River corner of Rocky Mountain National Park, where quiet woods and snow-blanketed meadows create a striking backcountry setting. Our approach to the general camping zone is roughly two miles, though we may wander farther if we need to scout out a more suitable site. Once tents are pitched and lunch is in our stomachs, we’ll explore the surrounding terrain in the afternoon, taking in open basins, sheltered forest pockets, or whatever features the snowpack allows us to reach. After dinner as darkness settles in, we can also take an optional short night hike to experience the stillness and clarity of a winter evening before turning in. Expect a genuinely cold night, with temperatures that will test your sleep system and preparedness. After a warm breakfast the next morning—and a few shared stories from the long night—we’ll pack up and follow the same route back to the trailhead.
Winter backcountry permits in RMNP are first-come first-served. There are limits on the number of permits allowed for each drainage area. In the unanticipated event that the Wind River drainage is booked, we will select another nearby drainage (details regarding alternate locations will be provided to registered participants or upon inquiry). After obtaining our permit but prior to beginning our trip, we will notify our emergency contacts of our intended campsite location.
Route details are included in the Route/Place.
Additional information will be provided in a pre-trip call with the group participants.
Will be announced closer to the time of the trip.
