Hiking – Arapaho Glacier Trail - Rainbow Lakes TH

RMOTHG MEMBERS ONLY This is a beautiful tundra hike along Caribou Ridge high above Rainbow Lakes and has great close-up views of Indian Peaks, Boulder Watershed Lakes & more. Please read Leader's Notes below.

  • Moderate to Challenging
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 6.5 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 1,700 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 11,625 ft
  • Pace: Casual Up, Moderate Down

This trail is steep in places and has the typical loose rock/root sections.  After hiking  2.25 miles, we will have gorgeous views of some of the Indian Peaks and Boulder Watershed Lakes below.  (We'll view the Arapaho Glacier from this distance as the actual overlook to the glacier is a 12 mile out-and-back from our TH.)   As we climb the flank of Caribou Mountain for the next 1.5 miles, we'll have views to the east of the foothills and a nice view of the Rainbow Lakes below.  From our lunch spot we'll be able to see Kiowa Peak, North and South Arapaho Peaks and Niwot Ridge.  We may hike a bit further up the trail depending on the group!!!

6:50AM - Colorado Mountain Club Parking Lot (north side), 710 10th Street, Golden

If there are enough people coming from the north, I can arrange a northern carpool.

The Rainbow Lakes trailhead is 5 miles off of the Peak to Peak Highway on CO116.  CO116 is a dirt road and  has a fair number of potholes.  A high clearance vehicle is recommended, but 4WD is not necessary.
