Spring Training (and no snowshoes)! Let's get some miles and some vertical. This is a Difficult hike due to the significant elevation gain, steep trail, rocky/loose trail surface, and potential for a bit of remaining snow. You should already be in decent hiking shape if you're registering for this trip; if you're not sure then this trip probably isn't for you.
The plan is to hike at a brisk pace (about 2.75 mph on relatively level trail) and adjust for the climbs up Bear Pk and Green Mtn. The hike opens with a sustained 2 hour climb on a steep and loose trail. (Approximately 2/3 of the climbing occurs in the first 3 miles as we ascend Bear Pk, and the other 1/3 is climbing Green Mtn.)
We will start hiking by 7:00AM, so please arrive about 10 minutes early to organize your gear and allow a quick brief for the hike. We will take breaks as needed, including a 20 minute lunch, but the plan is to keep moving at a steady pace. This should put us back to the Trailhead around 1:00 to 1:30. Here's a link to our route in Caltopo.
Plan for temperatures to be around 50F at the start, rising into the 70s later. More info here. And since this trip is on a Saturday, expect to see quite a few other people during our hike.
Also, this is a great opportunity to hike and ask questions if you've been thinking about the Advanced Backpack trips I posted.
Meet on the South side of the NCAR parking lot (the outer loop initially points East then swings around). We will start hiking at 7:00AM so please arrive a few minutes early to organize your gear and allow time for a quick briefing.
Required Equipment
Ten Essentials and Microspikes (snow from earlier this week should be melted by Saturday, but I don't have a current trail report; there are a few shady spots that may hold snow/ice). Also bring at least 2 liters of water - the forecast calls for temperatures to warm up, and we'll probably be hiking for about 6 hours.
