Hiking – Orbital Trail - Segment 5

For Rocky Mountain Over the Hill Gang members ONLY. We will hike segment 5 of the Denver Orbital Trail (DOT) – South Hogback Open Space, South Valley Park, and Deer Creek Canyon Park. In the beginning we will be on sidewalks but we will quickly get to trails and be on trails for the rest of the hike. There will be an optional stop at a local restaurant after the hike.

  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 4.9 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 662 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 6,141 ft
  • Pace: 2-2.5 mph

The DOT is a walking route that makes a full circle around Denver.  Segment 5 starts with a short walk on the sidewalk along Ken Caryl Ave.  We’ll then take the Cathy Johnson Trail and a variety of other trails through large rock formations.  We will continue through a grassy meadow towards the mountains and after a brief ascent into Deer Creek Canyon Park, we’ll be able to look back at almost the entire segment.

There are a couple of restaurants near the beginning of this segment so we’ll make a stop at one of them after our hike for any who are interested.

Here is the link to the map of Segment 5: https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/colorado/dot-segment-5-south-hogback-open-space-south-valley-park-and-deer-creek-canyon-park?u=i&sh=bhqvqk  Please note that there is an alert on the map which talks about private trails in Ken Caryl.  Your leader has confirmed that the trails we will be hiking on are open to the public.  There are bathrooms at the trailhead where we are meeting.

This route is exploratory for the trip leaders.

Carpool: Since the distance between trailheads is short and half of us will be driving, there will be no carpool cost sharing.

We will meet at 9:00am at Deer Creek Canyon Park Trailhead, 13388 Grizzly Dr., Littleton.  https://maps.app.goo.gl/iBZSnw2d9RtCDdBV9   We will carpool to our starting spot at the Ken Caryl Park N Ride, 7450 S Shaffer Ln, Littleton.
