* MINDFULNESS MEDITATION HIKE * This is a leisurely paced hike up to the overlook at Woods Quarry where we will stop for about 30 minutes for a mindfulness talk and guided meditation. No prior meditation experience is necessary.

I'm a Certified Mindfulness Meditation Teacher and am passionate about guiding folks into living a mindful way of life, through both formal practice and informal daily activities, including hiking! 

  • We will do short introductions at the trailhead. 
  • A nice leisurely, but steady hike to the top. 
  • We will stop about 20 minutes into the hike for a layer and water break. 
  • Once at the top, we have a fairly open space with several rocks, where we can stop. There are even make-shift rock chairs at the overlook.  I'll provide a brief overview of mindfulness meditation and its application to daily life (including the outdoors), and then we will practice a 15-20 minute meditation.  We will be stationary at the top for about 30 minutes, so plan accordingly with food and layers.
  • Before heading down, we can discuss whether participants would like to do a silent hike on the way down.

PARKING INFO: There are a few places to park near the picnic shelter by the Chautauqua Auditorium, which is where we'll meet:  (1) Chautauqua Park Parking:  https://maps.app.goo.gl/FxntCoXxpeCyLSU48  As you turn south off of Baseline Road and head up 12th Street toward the Auditorium, this small parking lot will be a little dirt horseshoe lot on your right.  (2) A small parking lot (mostly Disability Parking) near the picnic shelter by the auditorium:  https://maps.app.goo.gl/mcwCnhrcfC29zcau8 ; and (3) parking anywhere else around Chautauqua park and walk to the auditorium.  Please make sure to allow at least 5 minutes walking if you park somewhere else around the park and NOTE IF YOU ARE PARKED IN A PAY AREA - make sure to pay!  We will meet at the picnic shelter by the Auditorium (see pic attached).   

MEETING TIME:  6:45 a.m. at the Chautauqua Picnic Shelter.  NOTE: if you need restrooms, there are restrooms near the Auditorium, but I’m not sure they will be open. There also are restrooms at the Chautauqua Ranger Station by the main Chautauqua Parking Lot.      

DEPARTURE TIME:  7:00 a.m. (if you arrive after 7:00 we will be gone, so please don't try to catch up).

Required Equipment

  • Appropriate hiking attire, which means NO jeans or jean shorts and no street sneakers, Vans, canvas sneakers, etc.  If you arrive unprepared, the trip leader reserves the discretion to disallow you from the hike as this can be a safety issue for everyone.  
  • 10 Essentials.  If you don’t know what those are, you can find them here:  https://www.nps.gov/articles/10essentials.htm  
  • You may want to bring a pad to sit on for the talk and meditation.  Alternatively, you can sit on your backpack. 
  • Hiking poles, which can help on the climb up and down because there’s a short distance up and down from the overlook that’s fairly steep and gravelly.
