RMOTHG Trip – Berthoud Pass - Hocus Peak

Hocus (12,117') is a humble little peak that sits on the ridge just south of where the Butler Gulch Trail opens up at treeline. Despite the low mileage and elevation gain, this snowshoe and/or spike-hike has been described as "challenging" with steep sections. Plus... any Winter peak ascent above treeline should be considered a serious endeavor For those who are in shape, prepared, and like a challenge... this hike should be amazing!

  • High Point Elevation: 12,117 ft
  • Pace: Steady 1.5 mph - minimal stops

In Winter - especially above treeline - the 10 Essentials can be critical. Of particular importance is a Bivy Sac.  Most Recommended:  "SOL Emergency Bivy" or the SOL Escape Bivy.

Snowshoes and/or Microspikes and Poles with baskets are required.
Kahtoola Microspikes are the Standard. Yaktrax & similar are typically inadequate - except for walking on icy urban sidewalks.

Bring hand-warmers and a system to prevent your water from freezing.
