RMOTHG Trip – Burning Bear Trail

We will drive south on US 285 to the small settlement of Grant and turn right onto the Gunella Pass road. We will drive approximately 5.5 miles and park at the Burning Bear Campground parking lot. We'll walk 0.1 miles to the trailhead and then begin snowshoeing west along the trail. Our turnaround point will be at approximately 10,000 feet elevation. From there we will return to the cars.  (the parking lot elevation is approximately 9620 feet.)

Trip distance is approximately 5.5 miles with 600 feet of elevation gain.

Our anticipated pace will be moderate, described as 1.2 - 1.4 miles per hour, BUT our actual pace will be adjusted to accommodate all participants as needed.

I recommend bringing gaiters and micro-spikes.  We'll most like NOT need the spikes and can probably leave them in the car.

I'll provide a weather forecast 2 days before the trip.

We will meet at 7:45 AM on January 13th at the Mt. Falcon Open Space Upper Parking lot south of Morrison off of County Rd 8. The reason for this is that I am not certain of the rules for parking at the Fort Restaurant and this lot is only 1.5 miles north of the Fort.

The driving distance to the trailhead is 42 miles. The driver reimbursement is $12.50 per carload to be divided evenly among the riders.
