RMOTHG Trip – Mount Sherman

Located in the Mosquito Ranch near Fairplay, Mount Sherman highlights some amazing historic mining structures along the way as well as the possibility of seeing mountain goats and moose. Despite being considered perhaps the easiest of the 14ers, it still involves off-trail hiking on loose rocks and the last 1/2 mile to the summit traverses a ridge with steep drop-offs on either side. The wide path, however, is never too difficult or technical. We'll climb the standard Southwest Ridge Route from the end of Fourmile Creek Rd - plus, time & weather permitting - we'll add the short traverse over to Gemini Peak. This is a "get er done" rather than a "take time to smell the roses" kind of hike. (this is due to the higher lightning risk when travelling above treeline for long periods of time)

  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 6.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 2,400 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 14,043 ft
  • Pace: Moderate / Steady / Minimal Stops

Despite the shortness of this climb this is still a high-altitude, above treeline, peak climb. As such it is not to be underestimated.

Please consider your aerobic / physical conditioning for climbing at an altitude of 14,000 feet while maintaining a steady but moderate pace, over a 5 hour time frame - and how well you can handle the exposure on the final ridge to the summit.

A good rule of thumb when considering what to pack (especially for hiking above treeline):  Bring what you would need to stay warm & dry if you sprained your ankle or twisted your knee up on the mountain above treeline in a cold rain or hail storm and wouldn't be able to get down for several hours.
