RMOTHG Trip – Mount Sherman - The Southwest Ridge Route

Located in the Mosquito Ranch near Fairplay, Mount Sherman offers stunning 360 degree views of surrounding 13,000 and 14,000 foot peaks, some amazing historic mining structures along the way, and the possibility of seeing mountain goats and moose. Despite being considered perhaps the easiest of the 14ers, it still involves off-trail hiking on loose rocks and the last 1/2 mile to the summit traverses a ridge with steep drop-offs on either side. The wide path, however, is never too difficult or technical. We'll climb the standard 5 mile / 2000 ft gain Southwest Ridge Route from the end of Fourmile Creek Rd.

  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 5.25 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 2,000 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 14,043 ft
  • Pace: 1.0 - 1.6 mph

Despite the shortness of this climb this is still a high-altitude, above treeline, peak climb. As such it is not to be underestimated.

Please consider your aerobic / physical conditioning for climbing at an altitude of 14,000 feet while maintaining a steady but moderate pace, over a 5 hour time frame - and how well you can handle the exposure on the final ridge to the summit.
