Scramble – Keller Mountain

This trip ascends the East Ridge of Keller Mountain which is a Class 3 scramble with some loose rock with 4,045 ft of elevation gain. The trip begins at the Rock Creek Trailhead. This can also be done as a loop and becomes 13.1 miles when done as a loop. While starting out on a good trail the trail is reported to give way to primitive and then nonexistent trail requiring some bushwhacking on the approach. This trip will include not only 3rd class scrambling but a mix of gentle rolling ridges, talus hopping, and a screen gully. There is also potential for significant bushwhacking on the descent. Even with the early start this could be a long day so consider not scheduling activities later in the afternoon as return to the Wooly Mammoth is likely to be late afternoon/early evening.

  • Mileage: 9.8 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 4,045 ft
  • Pace: 2.0 -2.5

Trip participants will preferably have had participated in a scrambling class or have a relatively recent history of participating in similar scrambles.

When done as an out and back the mileage 9.8. When done as a loop it is 13.1 miles. The loop adds approximately 500 feet of elevation gain. Our goal will be to do this as a loop. But that determination can be made along the way.

The 2.0-2.5 mph is an estimated moving speed. We will likely be going slower on the ascent and faster on the decent.

4:00 AM at Woolly Mammoth Park-and-Ride section BB. Carpooling to be arranged at that time. 4:10 departure.
