For a number of years NoCo CMC has had an agreement with the Forest Service to maintain the Greyrock Trail. A wooden sign near the trailhead kiosk names us as maintainers of this trail. Last year a Forest Service ranger supplied tools for large and small body sizes, and supervision for a day of simple trail maintenence tasks any physically fit body size could do. At the end of the day he said we accomplished much, and we had fun. Expect to 'walk, stop, lop vegetation' for about 7 miles while carrying a 3 lb lopping tool, your backpack containing the 10 essentials, and at least 2-3 liters of water. Though we start in the morning, the day can get hot. We will work in the sun unless we have cloud cover. Consider evaporative cooling hats, neck gaiters, etc sold online containing gels or polymer crystals that cool the body as they slowly dry. I see them through REI, Ace Hardware, Home Depot, etc. Arctic Air is one brand. Such a hat worked well all day for me last year. This trip is strenuous but moderately paced. Come join us. If I have not hiked with you recently, before you sign up, please email me with RECENT hikes or activities you have done of similar distance and altitude gain. Questions? Exact meeting time and place will be sent closer to the trip date. Expect to meet in Fort Collins as early as 6:30, maybe 7. Our Forest Service supervisor is still working out details for our group.
Required Equipment
Sun protective clothing, sun protective hat, sunscreen, sun glasses, work gloves, hiking or work boots (we will be stepping in brush sometimes), and gaiters. Last year something crawled up my pant leg left a nasty bite above my sock. Or, wear high socks you can tuck pant legs well into. Bring plenty of water (Consider bringing ice water), lunch, snacks. Helmets provided by Forest Service.
