Hay Park Trail

The trail outside Basalt climbs through aspens and meadows to Hay Park, with wide-open views of Mount Sopris and Capitol Peak. Popular in summer for wildflowers and in fall for the colors.

The Hay Park Trail (USFS #1957) can be accessed from the Hay Park Trailhead off Capitol Creek Rd or about 1.75 miles in on the Mt Sopris Trail (USFS #1958) from the Mt Sopris/Thomas Lakes Trailhead off Dinkle Lake Rd  (dirt but is passable to most vehicles in summer).

The trail passes through aspen groves and mixed forest leading to broad meadows where Mt Sopris dominates the skyline to the south and Capitol Peak can be spotted to the north.  In summer, wildflowers are abundant, and in fall the aspens turn the entire trail golden.

The trail is about nine miles TH to TH, but hitting the mid-point from either TH is a good turn-around point.

The trail splits at about the half-way point and and rejoins itself at about 2 miles from the Hay Park TH.
