This is an elective scrambling trip for the NoCo Alpine Scrambling Course. Students must complete three elective scrambling trips in order to graduate and earn the appropriate Badge.
This trip will involve scrambling in subalpine terrain with extended class 3 terrain with significant exposure and some class 4 terrain. Leader will carry an alpine climbing rope with rock protection suitable to build fixed-lines for participants as needed.
The hike up Greyrock is deservedly one of the most popular hikes near Fort Collins. On this scramble, we will take an interesting and exciting ascent up the west and northwest side of the granite dome. We’ll start at the usual Greyrock Mountain trailhead and take the hiking trail up to the area below the granite dome of Greyrock. We’ll leave the trail and travel on easy off-trail terrain to the west side of Greyrock. From here we will scramble the Weenie route to the summit. Scrambling will involve lots of class 2 and 3 scrambling and a section of class 4 rock where we will plan to set fixed lines so that participants can self-belay with prusiks up the steep, slabby and exposed section. After enjoying the summit, we’ll descend using the usual Greyrock hiking trail.
NOTE: Email the leader before registering. Priority is given to CMC ASC students. If you are not a student you will be waitlisted and added to the roster if there is space available prior to the trip.
Additional information will be distributed to participants prior to the trip. Plan to leave Fort Collins at 7 a.m.
