Hiking – Fremont Peak

Celebrate the Winter Solstice by hiking to the summit of Fremont Peak 7233’ from Canyon Rim Trailhead in Royal Gorge Park. The hike starts on easy rolling terrain then progresses to moderate gain up to the saddle and a moderately challenging steep narrow trail to the summit. Views from the peak are amazing including the Royal Gorge Bridge, Sangre de Cristo Mtns and Pikes Peak, 8 miles, 1250’ gain, 1.5-2 mph pace.

From the trailhead, the hike will follow the Canyon Rim, Far Out and Summit trails up to the summit of Fremont Peak at 7233'. Trailhead access is by Fremont County Road 3A. Free parking is available in a small picnic area with a vault toilet directly across the road from the trailhead. The Royal Gorge Trails are amicably used by mountain bikers. The near 8 mile 1250' gain hike is classified as moderately challenging due to snow covered trails and the steep narrow trail that leads to the summit.
I did the summit hike on Monday December 16th to assess the trial conditions.  The lower trails were clear/dry or slushy/muddy but the upper trails leading to the saddle were covered by powder snow with some areas of packed snow and ice. The north facing trail to the summit was completely snow covered with some areas of mid-calf deep snow. I elected not to use traction and did fine with only use of trekking poles.

Pueblo participants will meet at the Southeast corner of Albertson's Parking lot at 1601 Hwy 50, Pueblo, 81008 for a 7:30 am departure and Colorado Springs hikers will meet at the Loves gas station at 690 Doc Holiday Dr, Canon City, 81212 for an 8 am departure to carpool or car caravan to the Canyon Rim Trailhead parking area. The hike starts at the trailhead.
