Mountain Voices: Wildflower ID & Author Talk

This Mountain Voices program features an engaging presentation with author Marlene Borneman on wildflower identification across Colorado’s diverse mountain landscapes. Drawing from her field experience and published works, she will introduce Colorado’s five life zones and explain how different wildflowers are found across elevation gradients—from foothills to alpine environments.

The presentation will include practical guidance on identifying wildflowers, understanding plant families, and recognizing key characteristics in the field. Marlene will also share examples of notable hiking areas within each life zone to help participants explore and observe wildflowers in their natural habitats.

The program will conclude with a Q&A session and book signing. This is a great opportunity for hikers, nature enthusiasts, and anyone interested in learning more about Colorado’s dynamic wildflower communities.

Marlene spends much of her time in Colorado, particularly in her “backyard,” Rocky Mountain National Park, where she locates and photographs wildflowers in their native habitats. Her interest in Colorado flora began in 1974 and has continued to grow ever since. She is the author of Rocky Mountain Wildflowers, Rocky Mountain Alpine Flowers, and The Best Front Range Wildflower Hikes. Marlene is a member of the Colorado Native Plant Society and is a Certified Native Plant Master. She teaches wildflower courses for the Rocky Mountain Conservancy and the Larimer County CSU Extension Native Plant Master Program.
