AIARE 2 - 3 Field Days – Berthoud Pass

Three full days in the field with instructor(s). Using the AIARE Decision Making Framework, you'll plan and execute your ski tour days with your team. Outcomes include building your terrain management travel, and decision making skills, practicing team leadership and management, and bridging weather forecasts and the known avalanche hazards to conditions in the field to reduce uncertainty as you progress through the day's tour.

Information will be sent prior to the class.

Day 1 - A full tour day led by the AIARE Program Leader. Activities include the trip planning cycle, TH checking in, forecast/avalanche hazard/tour discussion, beacon check, terrain travel, snowpack observations, modeling group leadership and management.

Day 2 & 3 belong to the team. You will plan a full day tour taking into account the weather forecasts, the avalanche hazard, your tour objectives, your team and risk management practices in the field. For these two days, think of your instructors as coaches, safety officers, and proctors.

Expect a 6-8 hour day. Be fit to travel 3-6 miles/day, with a potential elevation gain of 1,750'-2,500'/day, at an average pace of 900' - 1,000/ft/hr.

Required Equipment

Clothing: Mid-March can be warm, especially of sunny days. In Colorado that means layers and back-ups. Does not hurt to have hand/toe warmers, a pair of extra gloves and maybe something warm to drink.

Helmet for skiers and splitboarders

Sunglasses and/or ski goggles

Mode of Travel: AT Skis, Tele skis, split boards.

Food for the day, consider hot drink, water, energy snacks.

Sunblock, personal med kit, your normal repair kit suitable for your gear

Avalanche Gear - 3-antenna avalanche beacon, avalanche probe, (280cm recommended), and a non-plastic, collapsable avalanche shovel.
