AIARE Level 2 - 2023 Session 1

Risk Management & Avalanche Education Course

AIARE 2 - Denver

The Club's AIARE Level 2 hybrid course combines on-line pre-course work, on-going assignments in Google Classroom, 1 day - March 7 - Zoom based lectures, and 3 field days - March 13-15. It is the next step for backcountry travelers wanting to advance their decision-making skills, travel in more complicated terrain, and build a travel plan for a small group. If your goal is to have a deeper understanding of all things snow, improving your planning, communications, risk management and leadership skills, check out AIARE 2. PREREQUISITES: REQUIRED BADGES - AIARE 1 & AIARE COMPANION RESCUE. IF YOU HAVE TAKEN THESE, BUT DO NOT HAVE THE BADGES, CONTACT office@cmc.org AND HAVE THEM ADD THE BADGES TO YOUR MEMBER PROFILE.

AIARE 2 builds on concepts and practices introduces in AIARE 1. In AIARE 2, you'll dive deeper planning. You'll be purposeful in integrating the weather forecasts with relevant and appropriate snowpack observations and tests you may wish to do. You'll gain a better understanding of the Avalanche Hazard and relate it to your terrain and risk management. On your tour days you'll be a teammate and leader, rotating the roles with your teammates.

On-line learning, case study(ies) and Zoom lectures will ensure you have three productive tour days.  Field day one is is about instructors teaching and modeling the AIARE Framework. Days two and three are yours to build and execute. Your instructors will be coaching more than teaching. This is your opportunity to advance your skills and experience in a dynamic winter environment utilizing the AIARE  Framework.

The AIARE Program Leader is Karin Pocock, a 20+ year snow industry professional, and an exceptional educator and guide. Check her out at skylinebackcountryguides.com
