TCS Advanced Alpine Climbing School - Rock

Building upon the skills learned in ACS and other TCS class offerings, Advanced ACS is for students that want to continue to build on their progression and take their climbing to bigger more committing routes. Advanced ACS is broken into two modules: Alpine Rock and Alpine Ice. An additional course, Mixed Ice Climbing, can supplement the two modules in Advanced ACS. This class is the Alpine Rock module for Advanced ACS.

Leader approval required. Please fill out application to apply. 

School prerequisites or Equivalent experience are:

  • Alpine Climbing School
  • Seconding/Multipitch 
  • Trad lead (Students must be comfortable leading non-alpine, multi-pitch, 5.6 trad (e.g., clear creek canyon, flat irons, Eldo, or similar locations)
  • Ice Lead
  • Rescue - multi-pitch
  • AIARE
  • WFA

This Rock module will include the following:

  • 2 Weeknight Online Lectures 
  • 2 Weekends of skill building
  • Module Climb with instructor to demonstrate skills

Section Grad Climb Examples:

  • Alpine Rock: Keyhole Ridge Long’s Peak, Northeast Ridge Sharkstooth, North Ridge Spearhead, South Face Petit Grepon
  • Alpine Ice: Stairway to Heaven, Highway to Hell, All Mixed Up, Dreamweaver, Marthas, Hourglass Couloir

Final Grad Climb:

In addition, students may arrange a combined grad climb which combines all the skills you have learned throughout both modules of Advanced ACS.

There are two options when it comes to Advanced ACS

  • Glaciated Track: If you are interested in taking these skills on peaks which contain glaciers like the Pacific Northwest this is the track for you. 
    • Grad Climb Examples: LIberty Ridge, Ptarmigan Ridge, Torment-Forbidden Traverse
  • Non-Glaciated Track: If you are not interested in the glaciated track and are more interested in using your skills in Colorado or the Tetons, this is the track for you. 
    • Grad Climb Examples: Black Ice Couloir Grand Teton

Students are expected to arrange all grad climbs; time and location will be dependent on the route chosen by the student.
