Drones, also known as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), are flying machines controlled remotely or programmed for autonomous flight. These versatile tools capture beautiful aerial photos and videos, reach difficult-to-access areas, and perform tasks such as search and rescue, crop monitoring, and efficient deliveries making them valuable for both individuals and organizations.
Personally owned drones have evolved into more than a recreational toy. In recent years, with advancements in technology, drones have opened a variety of opportunities. In this presentation Jamey House and Daniel Hilf will be discussing many of the of elements surrounding modern drone usage including terminology, concept of operations, laws and regulations, capabilities, services they provide, and backcountry considerations.
About the presenters:
Jamey House moved to the Front Range in 1996 and has always had a love for the outdoors and exploring. In 2018, he focused his efforts to stay more active year-round in the backcountry, helping him to log hundreds of miles hiking. He has been a member with CMC since early 2022 and has been active since joining. He has completed various trips and courses with the CMC including Wilderness First Aid and the Alpine Scrambling Course. He has plans to become a CMC leader. He also possesses a passion for videography and photography. Acquiring a drone last spring he’s been using it in the backcountry making it possible to capture and share some of the incredible sites Colorado has to offer. Rapidly growing in knowledge and experience, he is now taking drone operation to another level as he studies for his Part 107 commercial drone pilot’s license.
Daniel Hiff has lived in the Front Range on and off since 2015 when he began his career in the military and has now settled in Fort Collins. Growing up overseas, Daniel has always had a strong attraction to nature and outdoor activities. This motivated him to gain formal mountaineering training and join the CMC in 2022 to take the Basic Mountaineering Course. His military position has since consumed a lot of his time, but he hopes this year to re-engage with the club’s community and the amazing training it has to offer. For many years he has experimented with photography, owned three drones in various evolutionary stages, and is now an FAA-Certified Commercial Drone Pilot for-hire. He hopes to serve a variety of customers, but with his outdoor recreation experience wants to specialize in projects where he can capture the beautiful wild side of the country.
