Plan to join us for dinner, volunteer recognition, and a fascinating presentation by Rodney Ley, adventurer and author of Backcountry Skiing Cameron Pass.
Cameron Pass: Secrets, Oddities, and Powder Skiing
Cameron Pass has a long history of curious facts, disappearing ski hills, and unusual geologic formations. How did these places get their names, who was John Zimmerman anyway, and what does he have to do with Lake Agnes? Join long-time hiker/skier/author Rodney Ley as we unwind the fascinating geology, human history, and rarely visited backcountry skiing spots on Cameron Pass.
Did you know Cameron Pass once seemed to have a golf course? Is there a 2-pitch ice climb on Iron Mountain? Discover why the chain of peaks running south from Clark Peak now bear the names of perching birds. And is it true that there are three whiskey caches located at treeline?
In 2021, Rodney began a deep dive into the history of Cameron Pass in preparation for authoring the guidebook Backcountry Skiing Cameron Pass published by Beacon Guidebooks. Published in 2022, this guidebook is available in an atlas book format or a waterproof map. Both items will be available for purchase at the presentation and $5 per book and $3 per map will be donated to the Colorado Mountain Club.
Discover more about Cameron Pass than you thought you wanted to know! Rodney has been hiking and skiing there for 53 years, so join us for a unique presentation---you are guaranteed to learn something new.
Bio:
Rodney Ley has been skiing on Cameron Pass since 1972 using wooden skis and cable bindings. Rodney founded the first backcountry yurt system in Colorado in 1985 in the State Forest State Park, and became the first avalanche observer on Cameron for the Colorado Avalanche Information System. In 1990, Rodney began a 30-year career at Colorado State University directing the Outdoor Program which included hundreds of backpacking, yurt, and avalanche education trips on Cameron Pass.
This is an evening you won’t want to miss!
