Workshop: CalTopo for Trip Leaders
Workshop: CalTopo for Trip Leaders A hands-on workshop where participants will learn the basics of CalTopo, a robust mapping software package with many options for creating and storing combinations of map layers, routes and tracks. These can be used for desktop planning of trips and with handheld devices in the field for navigation and recording of data. https://www.cmc.org/groups-sections/front-range-groups/northern-colorado/calendar-of-events-trips-and-courses/workshop-caltopo-for-trip-leaders https://www.cmc.org/groups-sections/front-range-groups/northern-colorado/calendar-of-events-trips-and-courses/workshop-caltopo-for-trip-leaders/@@download/image/caltopo 16x10.png

*** Note: This workshop is primarily offered for CMC Trip Leaders who will receive priority registration through June 1, after which all CMC members are welcome to join if there is space remaining.  If you are interested in this workshop but can't get a spot, let me know and if there is enough interest I will set up a second date open to CMC membership at large ***

*** Note 2: The classroom session starts at 6:00pm.  Drop by early to meet with participants Ashley Hanlon and Mara Coe from the CMC state office who will arrive by 5:30pm for some social time ***

This workshop will focus on CalTopo features that are most useful for planning and leading CMC trips.  No previous experience with CalTopo is necessary, although you will get more out of this clinic if you have at least a little familiarity with one or more computer-based planning or tracking applications such as Gaia, CalTopo, CoTrex, OnX, etc.  Participants should bring a laptop with WiFi capabilities, and create a free Caltopo account before the workship (I will send out instructions on how to do this in advance).  We will cover topics such as:

- Base layer and overlay options
- The use of (and difference between) maps, tracks, and routes
- Creating route options before trips and downloading gpx files for use with other devices (for example, hand-held phone-based gps apps)
- Making measurements of distances, elevation gain/loss, and slope angles
- Identifying public land boundaries
- Slope angle shading (default and custom)
- Finding weather/snow stations and data
- Sharing maps, tracks and routes with others
- Using CalTopo Folders to manage maps and trip data

We will also briefly demo a few features that come with premium accounts ($20 or $50 annually) but you do not need to sign up for a premium account in advance unless you want to use these features yourself during the clinic.
