Guide to Permits

This is a landing page for permitting for school directors, instructors, and trip leaders.

For CMC course and trip leaders - use these pages to learn about the permit requirements for our land managers, and the timelines associated with the permitting processes.

The majority of CMC trips take place on public lands. These lands may be federal (USDA Forest Service, BLM, National Park Service) state, county, or city open space. Trip leaders and Instructors are required to follow all of the established regulations when using public lands. Because different areas have different regulations, it is essential that the leader takes personal responsibility to understand and practice the regulations specific to their trips. These include group size, permits needed, et cetera. These regulations are subject to change, so the leader needs to check with CMC or the land agency website.

*The only exception being Jefferson County, which requires a permit to be carried by all CMC Instructors and Trip Leaders.

**Providing an "option field day" does not exclude a course from permitting.

PERMITTING RESOURCES:

Permit Request Form
  • If your course will have a field day element, please complete a Permit Request Form 90 days before your outing (or as listed below).
  • All requests must be accompanied with a map (here is an example). On the map of your desired location, indicate where you will park and the route/area you will occupy. Label the map with the name of your course and activity. Mention whether you will be in avalanche or snow covered terrain. If so, send the instructors Avalanche Terrain Avoidance or AIARE certification to the permit coordinator.

Archived Requests

  • Review the status of your requested permit in this spreadsheet. Updates are made regularly to reflect whether the application has been submitted, approved, or denied. If you do not see an update, contact permits@cmc.org

Approved Permits

  • This folder contains pdf copies of all approved CMC permits, as well as any additional documents instructors may need for their field day.

Post Use Report Form

  • Record data from each field day including date, location, type of activity, and the number of students and instructors. This information is required as a condition of an approved permit so land agencies can track visitor impact.
  • Submit your Post Use 1-3 days after your field day. An individual form is required for each field day of a course. (Trip Leaders do not need to submit post use for Jefferson County).
  • TIP:  save this form on your phone and enter the post use in the parking lot before you leave.

Please contact permits@cmc.org with any questions or concerns. Do not contact the land agency on your own.

    USFS

CMC has a Priority Permit with the US Forest Service. The permit is valid through 2032. Under this operating plan, we have a designated amount of service days* permitted at each location (service days = people). Our Summer permitting runs from June 1 - Oct 31. Our Winter programming runs Nov 1 - May 31.

    USFS Important Dates:

    • Winter Requests Due Aug 1
    • Winter Post Use Due June 15

    • Summer Requests Due Feb 1
    • Summer Post Use Due Oct 15

Required certifications: Wilderness First Aid for all guides in the field. AIARE or AMGA when applicable for the terrain.

    *What are Service Days?

    • The USFS calculates service days as the number of students on Forest Service land multiplied by the number of days on Forest Service land. Examples:
      • 10 students on a day hike: 10 * 1 = 10 service days.
      • 5 students on two different days: 5 * 2 = 10 service days.
    • We cannot change the total number of service days granted to us by the Forest Service. There is some flexibility in group size and travel days.

    Non-USFS Deadlines

    • This includes local and state agencies which include Jefferson County Parks and Open space, Boulder Country Mountain Parks and Open Space, Golden Gate Canyon State Park, Rocky Mountain National Park, etc.
